Why your neck can hurt days after a minor crash

Neck pain that shows up days after a minor crash is common, and it usually points to whiplash rather than something you did wrong. A low-speed collision can still move your head fast enough to strain the soft tissue in your neck.

What whiplash is

Whiplash happens when the head snaps forward and back quickly, stretching muscles and ligaments in the neck. The strain can be mild at the time, then stiffen over the next day or two as inflammation builds.

Why the delay

In the hours after a crash, adrenaline can mask discomfort. As it fades, the neck tightens, headaches can start, and turning your head may feel limited. This delay is normal and does not mean the injury is not real.

When to get checked

If neck pain, headaches, or reduced motion last more than a day or two, an exam is worth your time. Care that starts early tends to be simpler. Seek urgent medical care for severe pain, numbness, weakness, or trouble with balance.

How chiropractic care helps
